Don’t Let The Gift Giving Season Catch You (Financially) Off Guard

Although it’s hard to believe, the holidays are right around the corner. Before you know it, you’ll be bombarded with holiday lists, holiday billboards and “You Don’t Want to Miss This!” holiday email deals. It’s also the gift giving season and if you’re anything like me, you plan to give quality gifts to those you love and care for most. The truth is, gift giving season is best supported by gift giving funds. And we all know, those funds don’t just magically appear. So, in order to ensure you’re able to comfortably give the gifts you’d like this year, we’re sharing a few tips and tricks to help you on your way.

  1. Stick to a REALISTIC Budget

You know your finances best. Based on your income, your expenses and other life responsibilities, decide for yourself how much you can afford to spend this holiday season. Just because you love your entire family, can you realistically and comfortably afford to buy everyone a gift? Once you land on a number, write it down somewhere and keep it at the forefront of your mind the entire holiday season. The goal is to avoid going over that number.

2. It’s Never Too Early To Start Planning

The holiday season is the same time each year. It’s literally never going to change. With this in mind, it’s never too early to start making a list of gift recipients, gift ideas and setting money aside for these purchases. The money you set aside should contribute to the budget discussed in #1. No matter how much or how little you set aside each month or even each week, you’ll thank yourself when November and December rolls around and you have a bit saved for this sole purpose.

3. Take Advantage of The RIGHT Deals

Deals are designed to entice you and get you to purchase off mere impulse. However, because you were proactive and made a list of gifts and gift recipients (see #2), you’re less likely to fall for just any deal. Right? Right! Take advantage of the deals that make the most sense for you and your lists. It’s very easy to make purchases just because there’s a sale but that’s also one of the easiest ways to spend unnecessary money. Honestly, if it’s not on your list and it’s not an urgent need, don’t fall for it. Trust me, whatever it is will be on sale again soon.

Many often share that the holidays and gift giving season is stressful but it really doesn’t have to be. With proper planning and discipline, this can actually be the best gift giving season you’ve had thus far. And while you’re making a diligent list of your family and friends who you intend to gift, don’t forget to add yourself to that list. You deserve something nice too!
