Why You Should Have An Accountability Partner
At the beginning of the year, I’m sure you created a list of goals that you intend to accomplish by December. We all did. That’s usually what successful people do. The thing is twelve months is a long time. Even with your goals written down, it can be very easy to stray from the task at hand or put certain things on the back burner. Friends are great to provide encouragement and support when you’re chasing your goals, but what you really need is an accountability partner.
An accountability partner is an individual who is going to hold you accountable for the things you promised yourself you’d achieve. This person checks in on you occasionally and ensures that you’re actively working toward your goals at hand. Your accountability partner is tough on you, but for all the right reasons of course. They want you to succeed and they’ve made a commitment to ensure that you do. Sometimes friends and family can be too soft on us.
They sometimes tell us the things we want to hear rather than the things we need to hear out of fear of hurting our feelings. An accountability partner does the opposite. They tell you the things you need to hear whether you like it or not. Their primary goal isn’t to just be your friend—their primary goal is to see you accomplish your goal.
Survey your network and see who’d be willing to check in once a month to see what progress you’ve made. You and your accountability partner can set a schedule that works for the both of you where you’ll check in, set some goals, share advice and create plans of action. Find someone who is going to be committed. Your goals are not to be played with and if they’re not serious about helping you reach them, you may want to get a new partner.
Find someone who’s going to be honest enough to tell you when you’re wrong or when you could have made a better decision. Who’s going to “keep it 100%”? There’s still an ample amount of time to accomplish the goals you’ve set for 2023. If you don’t have one yet, get yourself an accountability partner soon! Essentially, find someone who’s going to be down for your goals like you’re down for your goals.
