Setting Boundaries: Establishing a Healthy Work-Life Balance

There’s been a huge shift in work environments within the last few years. The COVID-19 pandemic definitely imposed lasting effects on work culture. For remote working, new opportunities were created that seemingly fit smoothly into many lives. On the other hand, in-person work spaces had to adapt to new restrictions and rules that protected the workers against the ongoing threat (and consequences) of COVID-19.

Regardless of what workspace you find yourself in, this essential factor has never been more important to have: boundaries. Boundaries allow you to reset, recharge, and reset on a daily basis. That way, you can be present and productive on whatever your project (or passion) is. Even if it’s not your best foot forward, it’s still movement nonetheless!

When it comes to your work life, a lack of boundaries can lead to you being overworked and even resentful of your job. This can eventually lead to a burnout, which is not only unpleasant to be in, but also a hell of fight trying to get out of!

In the spirit of preventing burnout and protecting your peace, here are a few tips on establishing a healthy work-life balance:

TIP #1 - IDENTIFY YOUR PRIORITIES AND STICK TO THEM

A lot of times, work can feel overwhelming with daunting tasks, lingering to-do lists, and projects held on a standstill. Whenever you feel like you have too much on your plate, take the time to figure out what’s considered a priority and what isn’t.

When you have those sorted, you can divide your attention and focus appropriately. You’ll have better clarity of what needs your energy; you’ll also have a better understanding of what can be tackled at another time.

Additionally, knowing your priorities also helps you feel more confident in saying “no” to tasks that don’t require your effort at the moment. There may be times when coworkers or colleagues want you to shift your focus, but it’s essential that you aren’t swayed away from your respective responsibilities. Oftentimes, it’s better to finish your task before extending help. Teamwork is wonderful, but not at your expense.

TIP #2 EMBRACE YOUR TIME OFF

Whether it’s a lunch break, a 15-minute breather, or a week-long, PTO-sponsored vacation, embrace and honor your time away from work!

We live in a digital world where we’re always connected via the tablets, phones, and laptops at our fingers. It’s tempting to check in, and it’s also tempting to reply when you’re pinged. Despite this, if you’re on a break (whatever that may look like!), actually break away.

If you’re taking lunch or a small moment to yourself, distance yourself from being connected. Take a walk, take your off eyes off the screen, go grab a pick-me-up…whatever you can do to literally disconnect. If you’re on vacation, silence those notifications and don’t even think about casually checking your email.

Time off is for you to enjoy; not to still remain available and immerse yourself in work business. Honor your space and energy by making the best of your breaks.

TIP #3 DON’T FEEL PRESSURED TO BE TOO PERSONAL

The idea of a “work family” is a nice idea to have, and in some cases, this has definitely been proven true.

But here’s the reality of the majority of work situations: we cannot give companies the benefit of the doubt. As harsh as this sounds, a company will replace you without a given thought. Family ties and relations go out the window when business is looking bad, and it always serves as a relevant reminder to keep your professional and personal life separate.

It’s generally a good caution to go into your workplace with a fine line. On one hand, it’s okay to have friendly conversations with your coworkers that aren’t always work-related. On the other hand, it’s completely okay to refrain from small chat altogether.

At the end of the day, you’re there to perform a task, for which you’ll be compensated. Anything more than that is simply not necessary, and don’t feel bad for leaving it at that.

You spend a great deal of your life at work, so it’s essential that you establish boundaries that will create a healthy work-life balance for you!
