3 Tips for Successfully Negotiating Your Next Raise Or Career Move

Everything is going up in the world: gas prices, rent, groceries…the cost is costing like it’s never cost before! This sets a pretty serious tone for many of us: it’s absolutely necessary to be making more money in our respective careers.

For women, especially women of color, the thought of earning more money may feel a little intimidating. The gender wage gap has always been a disadvantage. When you mix that together with the race wage gap, it feels nearly impossible to receive the type of compensation that’s deserved.

Here’s the good news though: anything is possible with negotiation! Negotiation is a huge factor of your professional life, and honestly, it’s to be expected at some point of your career.

Feeling ready to step up and ask for what you deserve? Here are a few tips on how to successfully negotiate your next raise or career move:

Tip #1: Know Your Worth…Then Add Tax

It’s been said that comparison is a thief of joy; however, in this case, the lack of comparison can be a thief to your well-deserved coins!

Before you settle on a number for your negotiation, take the time to do some digging. A little bit of research can take your salary a longgg way. Visit sites such as Glassdoor or Payscale to view the salaries of your respective job title and description. Additionally, you can search specifically for roles located in your region to determine what the average pay is.

Once you get a greater understanding of what to ask for, reflect on your own contributions and work done for your company. This goes beyond results and rewards that were direct effects of your work ethic. Speak on other ways you align with the company’s mission and values, whether it’s how you prioritize certain tasks or how you approach challenges the company experiences.

After you combine these essential factors, you’ll be able to come up with an ideal salary worth negotiating for.

Tip #2: Paint a Perfect Pitch-ure

Sometimes, you have to remind yourself who exactly you are. In more dire times, you may have to remind your company who you are and what you can do.

Negotiations are the time for you to really prove how valuable you are to the company. While having this discussion with your higher-ups, put together a short presentation to showcase your impact. The proof is in the pudding; better yet, proof is in the results!

While you’re giving your pitch, remember to speak with confidence and assurance. With a role already secured within the company, you simply just need to speak on how you’re worth the investment.

Tip #3: Ask for Other Benefits As Well

When we think of negotiations, we typically think of asking for a raise or a higher salary. While more money is definitely a part of our professional goals, there’s much more you can get out of your company.

In order to maintain a healthy work-life balance, consider also negotiating additional benefits such as more PTO days, different insurance plans, or the option to work remotely. Although they may not completely make up for a new salary or raise, having some revamped benefits can leave a positive impact on your career.
